Basmati, is a variety of aromatic long grain rice, traditionally grown in India and Pakistan.
According to Oxford English Dictionary, the word basmati derives from Hindi, bāsmatī, literally meaning ‘fragrant’, from (bās, ‘fragrance’) + the word-forming suffix (-matī).
The first and most important step to follow before cooking any rice variety, is to wash it very well.
This should be done for many reasons: First of all, rice usually contains arsenic, either from the soil itself, or from pesticides (mostly used in the past). Moreover, washing is important in order to remove most of the starch and to achieve a better result for a pimply and fluffy rice with a perfect texture.
